My high school age daughter, Gina, has been working for In-N-Out Burger for about two years now.
It’s a privately held firm, but her employment there has given me a glimpse into the values, philosophy and inner workings of the company. I must tell you, the business is impressive….perhaps even more impressive than their top-notch food products.
Let me tell you why.
First of all, the company values its employees. Gina (a part-time, entry level associate) is earning almost 21% more than the current legal minimum wage here in California. And even though part time, she also accrues vacation and sick time based on hours worked.
That’s all great. But what impressed me more is their stated Purpose/Mission statement, which is printed on each employee pay stub:
Item 1 presumably represents the company’s most important values (paraphrasing): quality products and service in a stunning environment all to serve their most important asset, the customer. Oh and they are not shy to state up front that they are in business to make a profit. I love that – commerce and profits are not evil when they serve high quality for a fair price.
Item 2 speaks to the company’s work environment. Team and goal oriented, communication is highly valued. Quality training is provided, not only to result in great experience for the customer, but also for development and growth of all associates.
And finally Item 3 demonstrates a commitment to the idea that with great success comes great responsibility. The company understands that it is part of a community and wants to help the community improve and thrive.
Simply stated, In N Out is located at the intersection of commerce and community. That’s as good as it gets.
Next time you’re enjoying a double-double with fries and an drink, look around at the sparkling environment and happy, committed employees and remember you’re sitting at the intersection of commerce and community. We’re all important there.
One last thing. The final message on the employee pay stub reads: Remember, this paycheck was made possible by the customer.
In N Out. That’s what a business is all about.
